Garden Status Quo

Trevor doing doughnutsA decision had to be made! Working full time, tending my own gardens, attempting to maintain a blog, writing a bi-weekly gardening column and monthly newsletters, have been taking up far too much time. Something had to go! So…… I’ve decided to give up housework. And cooking. And laundry. Well, maybe not laundry – it’s pretty simple. By eliminating housework and cooking, I’ll have many more hours of free time to spend in the garden, which is after all the inspiration for everything else I do.

How sweet it will be to come home after work and have nothing to do but garden and write! What a life! I can’t wait to put this plan into action.

Let’s see –  first, there will be time to complete the water feature renovation that began last month. As that project progresses, there will be notes to make, photos to take and writings to create.

Next, I’ll complete the herb garden that has been a work in process since early May.  With any luck I’ll be harvesting many more herbs this year than anticipated. Of course, the herb garden expansion will have to be photographed, notes made and transcribed so they make some sort of sense. The harvesting and drying processes will need to be documented too I suppose.

The greenhouse! Yes! Finally, time to reno the greenhouse!! And take photos and notes and etc.

An iris bed has been a dream of mine for a while, as has an expanded rose garden. And a cutting garden! And oh, a much larger perennial garden! Those projects may make interesting chronicles.

Wow! That’s a lot of projects! That’s a lot of gardening. Hmmm. Let’s see now. If I give up the cooking and cleaning completely, that means Trevor will have to pick up the slack in those departments; Which means he won’t have as much time to spend gardening. Which means I’ll have to do his share of the garden maintenance. Not a problem! I love gardening!  But, since I’ll be doing all of the gardening, he’ll have to do the laundry. But if we add the laundry to his list, I will have to add the grass cutting to my list, since he won’t have time for that. I hate cutting grass, but fair is fair, right?

Gosh, I’ll be so busy gardening, there will be little time left for my other pursuits. How will I fit those in?  Well, Trevor will just have to do the dishes too! Then I’ll probably get stuck with washing the car.  I hate washing the car, but we all have sacrifices to make.

The grocery shopping! Yes, another one of those tasks I loathe that Trevor can do from now on. He actually likes grocery shopping! However, if that task is added to his list, I am being informed that I will be responsible for the tree trimming and the equipment maintenance.  Huh? That wasn’t part of the plan!

I am beginning to think this plan of mine has some major flaws. It was supposed to give me more time to garden, not cut the grass, wash the car, trim the trees and service the equipment! Maybe I should re-think things a little? Maybe I shouldn’t rush into this redistribution of household and gardening tasks?  I’ll keep working on it, but until I have all of the bugs worked out, the status quo will remain. I’ll keep you posted.
